I was not able to chat using the MeeboMe box. Virtual Library is offline. I have never used instant messaging, but I do get text messages on my cell phone. I have a pretty good idea of how it works.

I use instant messaging at home all the time. It is one way that I communicate with my grown children all over the US. I also get a lot of text messages on my cell phone from friends and even my grandchildren. It is defintely the wave of the future means of communication. I still like talking on the phone better.

I tried to chat with you, using the MeeboMe, but BD was offline at the time. I have used IM before, but it's actually been years and years, it's a great way to chat. But I also like using the phone, at times I can talk faster than I can write. I might try this on my own personal computer at home, instead of my work one.

I am familiar with Chat and Instant messaging. I prefer to use the phone. We also do not permit chat in our library so I didn't want to use the Chat on my work computer since I was already familiar with it.

So often in the library we have to ask patrons to NOT chat it is difficult to let myself do this. It is my first day to do any kind of chat. I am not sure I will use it too often because I still use the phone.

My coworker and I used our Gmail logins and learned to use the IM feature they offer. It was easy and fun. We were able to keep up with each other unless we had another thought and sent a second message before the other of us replied to the prior message.

I used gmail. But I don't intend to use this kind of service because I've used it before and could never get into it. I'm finally finshed with all 13 activities. Thanks! Thanks! Thanks. . .I hope to see more in the future.

I don't IM frequently, but I have used it in recent years to keep in touch with my grown children who, of course, use it all the time.
For this exercise I chatted with my niece in Switzerland, which was a lot of fun.
I definitely agree with comments in some of the other threads in relation to IM and multitasking. Maybe it's generational. I've seen my kids keep on top of several conversations at once without a problem. That, to me is just too stressful. I do think IM is a useful tool, though.
I also used Skype for the first time this week. I talked to my son and six-month-old granddaughter in Brooklyn. Skype is a nice way to be able to "see" them when I can't be with them.
I poked around Webopedia and NetLingo. That was illuminating, and another interesting peek into that culture that these exercises have helped me become, at least, more familiar with, if not a part of.

Although I realize all of the benefits of IM, I use it only infrequently. I've used Skype for class and thought it was pretty neat, but not too many people I know have/use Skype.
A few years ago, I used AIM quite a bit, but not so much anymore. When I'm online, I prefer being "invisible" as multitasking is difficult for me. If I have an objective for my time online, I feel like IM is a distraction.
If I am on facebook, though, I usually will chat with a friend or family member. Since I use the site to keep in contact with people, finding them live online is usually a nice surprise.
When playing games online, I'll sometimes chat with the other players, especially if I know that person. When everyone is completely anonymous, I'm often intimidated. Maybe once I learn some more IM lingo, I'll feel more confident adding my .02. :)
I plan to further explore the Meebo widget. It might be useful for my library pages.

I actually ended up doing the chat through Facebook, with my daughter. It was a lesson in extreme multitasking for me because I was talking to her on the cellphone, IM chatting with her, then she got her boyfriend to IM me and I had another chat going. At that point it became sensory overload for my old brain. But I was LOL.

I've been using MSN Messenger for the last couple of years, and Google Talk was just as fun. It is a completely different language at times haha, but I really enjoy it. It's also very useful while sharing information; sometimes information can't be communicated as effectively over the phone versus in print.
